VAMPIRE WEEKEND - 'CONTRA'

Un paio di estati fa rimasi estasiato da un album.
Gli autori erano i newyorkesi Vampire Weekend, a prima vista tipici ragazzi da college americano, con le facce pulite e con addosso una camicia ralph lauren appena stirata.
All'epoca questo LP, opera prima del quartetto, era già uscito da una manciata di mesi, ma i suoi ritornelli orecchiabili e i suoi ritmi caraibici lo resero ideale per le mie pennichelle sotto l'ombrellone.
Cosa apprezzai subito del disco fu la freschezza di certi suoni, che erano sì caratterizzati da ritmi, come molti dicono, afro-pop; ad essi però si sovrapponevano alcuni discreti giri di chitarra di strokesiana memoria.
Iniziamo col dire che questo Contra, nonostante non sia per nulla inferiore al suo predecessore, non piacerà probabilmente a coloro che quel primo disco proprio non lo hanno apprezzato.
Le peculiarità dei Vampire Weekend, infatti, si dimostrano intatte fin dal principio di questa loro seconda fatica discografica: Horchata è il nome del primo brano, ma anche quello di una bevanda (tipicamente esotica) presa a pretesto dal cantante Ezra Koenig per portarci in un vortice di ricordi estivi e tamburi afro.
White Sky è un altro pezzo molto piacevole, in cui Ezra ci parla della sua Manatthan, dimostrando l'ammirazione che prova per la sua città ma anche la facilità del suo gruppo nel creare canzoni semplici ma con ritornelli trascinanti.
La velocità, con il terzo pezzo Holiday, inizia a salire. California English è una canzone atipica per il gruppo, in cui la voce è anche parzialmente modulata dal vocoder: ha bisogno di qualche ascolto per essere assimilata, ma si rivela a mio parere uno dei migliori pezzi del disco.
Un altro pezzo atipico è Taxi Cab, che, insieme alla traccia che chiude questo LP, è il primo esempio di pseudo ballad attribuibile ai quattro newyorkesi.
Già dopo aver ascoltato la prima metà del disco, comunque, appare chiaro che gli ingredienti principali, nei suoni del gruppo, non sono affatto cambiati. Sono solo stati mischiati più sapientemente, o comunque in maniera diversa, per non creare la solita "minestra riscaldata".
L'album si rivela meno immediato del suo predecessore, perchè gli arrangiamenti sono più sofisticati, i cambi di tempo più repentini. Le chitarre sono diminuite, per lasciare più spazio ai sintetizzatori, che però mantengono intatto il richiamo alle sonorità etniche che si respirava all'esordio.
Questo amore per i ritmi afro viene confermato poi dall'importanza che ha nel disco la batteria: essa si rivela come la vera e propria colonna portante delle canzoni dei Vampire Weekend, a cui la chitarra si accoda per trasformarsi spesso in strumento di percussione aggiunto, con pennate frenetiche e decise. Il singolo Cousins è una chiara riprova di quello che ho appena detto, nonchè, probabilmente, uno dei pezzi più belli e caratteristici dell'intera discografia del gruppo. 8


A couple of summers ago I was entranced by an album.
The authors were New Yorkers Vampire Weekend, at first sight, the typical American college boys, with theirs clean faces and freshly ironed Ralph Lauren shirt.
At the time this LP, the debut of the quartet, had been out for a few months, but its catchy tunes and its Caribbean rhythms made him ideal for my nap under the beach umbrella.
What I appreciated once of this disc was the freshness of certain sounds, which were characterized by rhythms, as many say, Afro-pop, but they overlap to some discrete rounds guitar of strokesian memory.
Let's start by saying that Contra, although for anything less than its predecessor, probably will not like that first disc for those who just do not have appreciated.
The peculiarities of Vampire Weekend, in fact, prove to be intact from the beginning of this effort their second record: Horchata is the name of the first track, but also that of a drink (usually exotic) as a pretext by singer Ezra Koenig to bring you in a vortex of summer memories and African drums.
White Sky is another very nice song, in which Ezra speaks of his Manatthan, showing the admiration he feels for his city but also the ease of his group to create songs with simple but rousing choruses.
The speed, with the third track Holiday, begins to rise. California English is an atypical song for the group, in which the voice is modulated in part: he needs some listening to be assimilated, but is revealed in my opinion one of the best parts of the record.
Another atypical song is Taxi Cab, which together with the track that closes this LP, is the first example of pseudo ballad attributed to the four New Yorkers.
Even after listening to the first half of the disc, however, it seems clear that the main ingredients, the sounds of the group, are not changed, they have only been shuffled more wisely, or at least differently, not to create the usual "soup heated".
The album is less immediate than its predecessor, because of the arrangements more sophisticated and the more sudden changes of time. The guitars have decreased, leaving more work for the synth, but keep intact the reference to ethnic sounds that breathed debut.
This love of African rhythms is confirmed by the importance it has in the record then the drum: it reveals itself as the real backbone of the songs from Vampire Weekend, who queued up to turn the guitar into an instrument of percussion often added busy with pen and decided. The single Cousins is a clear proof of what I just said, and, probably, one of the most beautiful and characteristic tracks of the entire discography of the group. 8
