ARCTIC MONKEYS - HUMBUG

Sono una di quelle (forse poche) persone a cui il cambio di sonorità del gruppo non è dispiaciuto affatto. Anzi, sono fermamente convinto che, nonostante questo terzo album delle scimmie non sia bello quanto i primi due, la scelta di pubblicare un LP che strizza l’occhio allo stoner più melodico sia una testimonianza di maturità e coraggio da parte del quartetto di Sheffield.
Humbug si è rivelato un signor disco: il migliore, a mio parere, dell’anno appena trascorso.
I grandi pezzi non mancano, e l’alternanza alla produzione di Josh Homme e del sempreverde James Ford (questa volta poco utilizzato) garantiscono una buona varietà tra pezzi “duri” e ballads.
L'attento ascolto dei nuovi pezzi mette in luce il raggiungimento da parte di Alex Turner di una maturità maggiore anche nella scrittura dei testi, che sono più introspettivi(quasi tutti in prima persona), psichedelici ed enigmatici rispetto ai racconti di episodi tardoadolescenziali degli esordi.
E’ un album intenso ed eterogeneo, che passa dai rimandi ai primi Coral di The Jeweller’s Hand a quelli marcatamente stoner di Crying Lightning. Potion Approaching, invece, sembra uscita da un vecchio disco dei Black Sabbath.
Il disco, insomma, denota una spruzzata qua e là di Last Shadow Puppets nei brani prodotti da Ford e una buona dose di rock in quelli registrati con Homme. Di questi ultimi, Pretty Visitors si gioca, insieme a Brianstorm e From The Ritz To The Rubble, il titolo di pezzo più cattivo delle scimmie. 9



I'm one of those (probably few) people to whom the change of sound the group is not sorry at all. In fact, I firmly believe that despite this third album of the Monkeys is not as beautiful as the first two, the decision to publish an LP that winks at the more melodic stoner is a testimony of maturity and courage on the part of the quartet of Sheffield.
Humbug has been a great LP: the best, in my opinion, in the year just ended.
The beautiful tracks are not lacking, and the alternative to the production of Josh Homme and the evergreen James Ford (this time rarely used) provide a good variety of "hard" songs and ballads.
The attentive listening of the new tracks, highlight the achievement by Alex Turner e of a maturity in the writing of texts, that are more introspective (almost all in first person), psychedelical and enigmatic, compared with the teenager stories of the early episodes.
It's an intense album, which passes from the first indications Coral of The Jeweler's Hand markedly with those of stoner Crying Lightning. Potion Approaching reminds me of Black Sabbath. The LP denotes a splash here and there of Last Shadow Puppets in the tracks produced by Ford and a good dose of rock in those recorded with Homme. Of these, Pretty Visitors, to play along with Brianstorm and From The Ritz To The Rubble, the title of most evil piece of monkeys. 9
