ARCTIC MONKEYS - SUCK IT AND SEE

ARCTIC MONKEYS - SUCK IT AND SEE (2011)

Less than two years after the controversial Humbug, here comes the brand new Arctic Monkeys record , with the the mysterious and ironic title of Suck It and See. If Humbug was an hard outside and soft centre sweet , SIAS seems to be, accomplishing the title, a much more indefinite candy, and to appreciate this you got to, in fact, "suck it and see."
Here's my review of this album for Arts Club, read this waiting the gig in the beginning of September in Bologna in which Arctic, on 3r of the month, will try to repeat the success of critics and audiences got in the concert of January 26th 2010 in Milan Palasharp.

THE VACCINES - WHAT DID YOU EXPECT FROM THE VACCINES?

What Did You Expect From The Vaccines.
Come sempre, la verità sta nel mezzo. Buona lettura.

THE VACCINES - WHAT DID YOU EXPECT FROM THE VACCINES?

Here we are again to review the last British sensation, in a saturated market. This time, however, part of the hype created around the band can be pretty lawful, despite the boys in question take immediately distanced itself from it by cunnigly calling their debut What Did You Expect From The Vaccines.
The truth lies somewhere in between, as usual. Enjoy your reading.

SURFER BLOOD - ASTRO COAST

Così, su un quieto “so I have to go” in dissolvenza ,si chiude quest’album.

Surfer Blood testify the good form that is experiencing the indie pop in the USA, and particolarly in Florida (former home of the now famous Drums).
Astro Coast is the first test for this group of boys from West Palm Beach, and despite the inevitable pitfalls of youth, may after all be surpassed.
The disc features in his 40 minutes a predominantly lo-fi guitar sound, peppered here and there quotations from noisepop of the 90s' and is since the first listen deeply eclectic.
The texts of the quartet, in most cases, would satisfy the classic Seth Cohen, because his constant references too paranoia and inadequacy: about the future, about love and about the complexity of interpersonal relationships in general.
The influence here can be found in the the Shins rather than in the darker Death Cab. Even the singer's voice J.P. Pitts is very similar (especially in certain parts) of James Mercer tone, but the lyrical brilliance of the Shins' singer it is even far away.
Floating Vibes, the first track, shows immediately the ability of Surfer Blood to embroider guitar riffs and catchy melodies.
Swim it's the main single of the LP: gripping from the first listen, recalls the great Weezer's Blue Album.
The two subsequent tracks carry on pleasing, and smoothly along the lines of Floating Vibes.
Neightbour Riffs is a tasty instrumental, surf-music inspired, that reinterprets the the Beach Boys sounds as many groups (Real Estate, for example) have taught recently. Remains one of the finest tracks of the record.
Twin Peaks is another good song: the title alludes to the sexual frustration of the protagonist, forced to use the sofa of a friend only girl to watch movies of Lynch.
Slow Jabron it's a Shins style song, and leaves us with the two tracks that close the LP, which are Anchorage (perhaps the weakest song of the record) and Catholic Pagans, that fits perfectly as melancholy final track of the record.
So, on a quiet "I know I have to go" the album fade.
An album with fresh and spare no special drops.
A fresh album that, for lovers of 90s imaginary and retro-surf feeling, it will be a faithful companion for years and summers to come. 8

CARIBOU - SWIM

In some, rare occasions the title and the album cover can be a clear fresco of the creative process used by a musician in approach to his work.
This last effort of the Canadian multi-instrumentalist Caribou (formerly Manitoba) it is a manifest proof.
The title of the LP, Swim, and the vortex of warm colors peeping out from the cover minimal black background, give us the right visual perception of what we feel once we press play to listen to the disc.
A stream of sounds, hypnotic and psychedelic but deep, featuring a range of effects flowing and dense, capable of shaping an electronic music that appeals citationistical (ranging from minimal attitude dancy DFA, through the folk-soul of the beautiful Jamelia) but reinterpreted to perfection by proposing an eclectic but accessible sound.
With Swim, Caribou is allowed to swim (that's it) in atmospheres that are, in many songs, warmer than normal electronic works.
This is because the tracks of this album are the result of a perfect blend of synths, guitar and even raids flute inserts (see Leave House, sometimes ethnic piece but with a beat to LCD Soundsystem).
The single and first song on the disc, Odessa, is the quintessence of this compositional attitude: Caribou here plays a little 'to do the James Murphy, and a bit' the Panda Bear of the situation (an attitude that will recur in Bowls, that stands for several incursions of strings and cowbells).
I can still quote Kaili, one of the best track of the disc where the singing takes on a key piece in the emotional appeal of the song, testifying once again the clear intention is to humanize certain robotic sounds.
Swim is an album that, despite testing, shines its light on virtually every piece, and although not follow the path folk-tronic that Caribou had begun with Andorra, is able to demonstrate skill and verve composition. 9

THE COURTEENERS - FALCON

You Overdid It Doll è il primo singolo dell’album.

We are facing the second LP of Mancunian guys Courteeners, pupils of his majesty Morrissey.
The charisma of arrogant frontman of this band (and markedly Gallagherian, like the rest his look) has always been a double-edged weapon. Liam Fray, in fact, because of its genuine arrogance, tends to generate huge expectations against the band's record releases, which are then promptly rejected. Let's be clear right away. St Jude, the Courteeners debut, was not a bad album. He was very direct, and with some great singles. It was appended to the style of many groups brit-rock era, but had neither the verve nor the maturity necessary to erect the Courteeners as new messiahs of Manchester, as too many magazines had predicted.
This Falcon seems to be more mature and rational.
The sound of the group seem to change and the pieces are much softer and often have parts of piano. There are several orchestral and anthemical arrangements, that wink in the last Elbows, putting aside the Libertines riffs that characterized the debut with the intent to embrace more audience and increase it's credibility as stadium indie-band. Their intention is, however, succeeded only in part.
As already happened in St Jude, the first pieces of the disc are more tasty. The opening track is, for example, perhaps the best of the record. The majestic The opener, already from the first chorus shows a double declaration of love, longing and respect to Manchester and to an hypothetical woman who lives far from this city. The admiration of the band towards the environment that gave birth is a recurring theme in many parts of the album, but, moreover, the Courteeners are truly revered by crowds of their city. Take Over The World, in line with a text that seems to want to erect the band to Olympus of rock bands, is musically a perfect anthem for those who sing their hearts out in rooms crowded. Has an excellent growth and an enviable but repetitive chorus. The subsequent track, Cross My Heart And Hope To Fly, is in line with the sound of the previous one and shows also a good care over the use of melody. But you can already guess that the lyrics are quite simple, although they have changed a bit theme compared to the first disc. You Overdid It Doll is the first single of the album. The refrain is very catchy and the piece has a good dose of hard groove (in pure Kasabian style) that was missing in the debut album. At this point the quality of work falls enough, as evidenced by songs such as The Rest Of The World Has Gone Home, an acoustic song that enhances the voice of Fray, but is also less isnspired than How Come?, a similar ballad of the first album.
Falcon is a good album that lovers of this kind of music will certainly love to hear for a while. But it's not a masterpiece, or the certificate of maturity that maybe Liam Fray wanted to show the whole world. The repetitiveness of certain tracks, and some decline of quality in the final songs will not preclude the Courteeners to fill stadiums in their Manchester, but will not allow them, at least for now, to take possession of largest audiences in the world as claimed in one of the songs of this LP. 7

THE DRUMS - SUMMERTIME! EP

I might learn to hate you, lady. One week and you’re acting crazy. I might have to hate you, baby . This is what I thought it would be. This is the saddest summer ever”).

The drums sounds like the Smiths arrived suddenly in a California beach. Joy Division with the passion of surfing.
Well, at first glance they might seem the classical Mancunian sad guys that twenty years ago would have crossed the gates of Factory Records with a contract in hand.
But they are Americans, indeed, but with a passion (mentioned several times in interviews by vocalist Johnathan Pierce) of Morrissey and the New Wave.
And so listening to the first song of the EP, the beautiful Let's go surfing, you immediately thought of an incurable nostalgic who wants to leave the gray land of Albion to go surfing in some remote place with sea, thus transforming its depression into happiness.
The whistles of this track make you lost your head for the band at first listen.
Make you mine again is a pearl, which embroiders on stilemmi rock from the 50's a melody true bull's eye.
Do not be a jerk, Johnny leads to the first Vampire Weekend, but the text is more reflective and melancholy and with dreamy moods.
After Submarine, which looks like a Cure song with inserts of Beach Boys, we come to the slow Down by the water, in my opinion the less inspired track on the disc.
Saddest Summer is the masterpiece of 'EP, almost a manifesto for the sad boys come from Florida. As is clear from the title, has nothing to do with the classic song about a summer love, and confirms the obsession of the group to the stories unhappy man / woman and the summer sun ( "Summer's just beginning, baby. I might learn to hate you, lady. One week and you're acting crazy. I might have to hate you, baby. This is what I thought it would be. This is the saddest summer ever "). Despite the pessimistic text, the chorus is so catchy that could be a big wheel.
The last piece of the record, I Felt Stupid, is again valuable. Here the most obvious influences (expecially in the great chorus) are some piece of Strangeways Here We Come, but you can see a few winks here and there of New Orders tracks.
We are dealing with seven potential singles: many indie bands of today would kill to sound like this in a debut EP. Now, we must wait the long playing of the group, out this year. But if you see the good days in the morning... 10

DELPHIC - ACOLYTE

Acolyte was one of the most anticipated debuts of this start of 2010. It's been at least six months that the hype around this band continues to rise, mainly due to the peculiarity of their videos and the continued inclusion on lists and charts on the next big thing of the year just begun.
Since chosing the label distribution of the LP, the French Kitsuné, the group makes its electronics workhorse. From the first track of this record, Clarion Call, stand subtleties of sound are reminiscent of fellow New Order, although there are no peaks that characterize many quality songs of Award Winning Sumner-Morris-Hook.
The second and third track are two of the singles from this album. Doubt quilt on a 80's melodic line sung in Klaxons style. This Momentary is a continuous increasing hypnotic, and is known to most people for inclusion in one of the latest Kitsune compilation and a music video, filmed in Chernobyl, incredibly fascinating.
Red Lights gives us an intro that could remind more of the first Calvin Harris, but then surprises us by becoming a trip where the Kraftwerkian electronic influences are becoming increasingly obvious. Acolyte, the title track, emphasizes the homage to the group of Dusseldorf. More than eight minutes of electronic madness, this conceal the true manifest of musical intent of Delphic. It's since the times of the wonderful La femme d'argent by Air that I had not heard of a carpet of algid synthesized sounds so convincing. Halcyon is the last single released, and it is in my opinion the track more easy listening in the disc. Could well be one of the less inspired songs of Power, Corruption & Lies by New Order. Submission has a guitar riff that makes the track extremely enjoyable. Counterpoint resume musically stylistic canons of the title track, but it is more immersive. The quality of the last two songs is partially inferior, but not succeed in ruining the dreamy atmosphere that gives this record. An album that, although not a masterpiece and not really personal and original, does not disappoint the expectations raised. Lovers of electronic music and experimentation will meet to hear and listen to it. 8

HADOUKEN! - FOR THE MASSES

Gratuita a mio avviso.
Spieghiamoci meglio.

And after the release of a single / EP MAD, of wich, after all, I was not disappointed, here's the new record effort of the group of Leeds.
Our champions of Grindie (as is usually labeled them) rely this time on a drum'n'bass producer, NOISE, which makes the atmosphere LP more rave-oriented than their first album.
Musically this disc is not even too much to throw away, misses tracks particularly intense and inventive, as Declaration of War and Crank It Up, but since the beginning of the album, with Rebirth (which may seem from the first listen to the soundtrack of electronic 'umpteenth Mortal Kombat) you will understand that even if the Hadouken have changed little in their sound, something good in their songs is still there, as evidenced Turn The Lights Out and Ugly.
Despite the sound, making more and more a tribute to Prodigy and derivatives (Bombshock pieces as I am here to testify), you can still feel grime shades of onset, and the LP is a small concentration of malice. Free in my opinion.
Let me explain better. The Hadouken are physically changed, putting aside their fluorescent and coloured clothes (inspired by new rave) to give way to a darker outfit. But the lyrics of their songs, have not undergone even a minimal change.
While some lyrics of the band debut album (like That Boy, That Girl, or the bloody Liquid Lives) could seem, for the more introspectives, the ironic critique of a youth that "drink, smoke, fuck, fight", this record shows that probably for Hadouken!, these behaviors should be really cool and in for an English boy in late adolescence.
Faced with a myriad of texts like that, depicting angry teenagers terribly devoted to pleasure and to destruction (in a botched sometimes), the lyrics are as banal that Luke Pritchard romantic words, in comparison, seems a poem by Baudelaire.
The first album was called Music for an Accelerated Culture, perhaps because the group wants to claim to manifest this new accelerated youth, whose basic values are angry, superficiality and pills.
The name of this new LP, For The Masses, made think this culture, for Hadouken!, should expand and flourish exceedingly. But I hope that the youth, now, is not as fucked up, and therefore tend not to listen to them. 5

ARCTIC MONKEYS - HUMBUG

I'm one of those (probably few) people to whom the change of sound the group is not sorry at all. In fact, I firmly believe that despite this third album of the Monkeys is not as beautiful as the first two, the decision to publish an LP that winks at the more melodic stoner is a testimony of maturity and courage on the part of the quartet of Sheffield.
Humbug has been a great LP: the best, in my opinion, in the year just ended.
The beautiful tracks are not lacking, and the alternative to the production of Josh Homme and the evergreen James Ford (this time rarely used) provide a good variety of "hard" songs and ballads.
The attentive listening of the new tracks, highlight the achievement by Alex Turner e of a maturity in the writing of texts, that are more introspective (almost all in first person), psychedelical and enigmatic, compared with the teenager stories of the early episodes.
It's an intense album, which passes from the first indications Coral of The Jeweler's Hand markedly with those of stoner Crying Lightning. Potion Approaching reminds me of Black Sabbath. The LP denotes a splash here and there of Last Shadow Puppets in the tracks produced by Ford and a good dose of rock in those recorded with Homme. Of these, Pretty Visitors, to play along with Brianstorm and From The Ritz To The Rubble, the title of most evil piece of monkeys. 9

THESE NEW PURITANS - HIDDEN

Can a group who maade one of the biggest dancefloor-filler of 2008 carve out a space of respect in the history of modern music?
This must have thought Jack Barnett, frontman of the English These New Puritans, putting his hands on this new LP, follower of the acclamated Beat Pyramid.
From the outset it is felt that this' album, while pursuing some of the features that made them recognizable NPT debut album, is much more ambitious than its predecessor.
After the introduction of courtly Time Xone, we are immediately in front of We Want War, the longest piece to date discography of ours, that represents a true manifesto of their music. You can tell already that the group wants to deepen the studies that distinguished rhythmic pieces like Swords of Truth and Numerology aka Numbers. Drums in the songs are incessant, repetitive and solemn, in which the sound is primarly made by synth and showed itself strong influences of math-rock (the Battles, so to speak).
It remains clear the passion of the band about the new wave avant-garde experimentation and the vocals of the LP that reads in its own way many of the stylistic features hip hop and trip-hop of the last decade.
Other than that though, the NPT amaze us in many songs, with orchestras and nice choirs (even children) who can often recall those of Gregorian. It still breathes the atmosphere dark onset, but this time more frequently refer to oriental sounds, and especially, Gothic-medieval.
Hologram, for example, is a little gem that shows what good is there in this new "side" of the quartet of Southend-on-Sea. This song also feature great piano chords. Noteworthy are also the pieces Attack Music (featuring a chorus of children almost chilling) and Fire Power, which testifies that the math-rock sounds reminiscent for the group. My favorite tracks of the album are still the duo Oracle and Canticle, which, together with 5, get into the fledgling medieval influences of these NPT of 2010.
The lack of certain tracks, immediate and danceable, like Elvis, is certainly felt, but testifies to the courage of this band, convinced of not having to make compromises to achieve a moderate success. I think there are rerequisites for the fame (and why not, for a place in history), however, because the LP sounds good. And it grows with each listen. 9

VAMPIRE WEEKEND - 'CONTRA'

A couple of summers ago I was entranced by an album.
The authors were New Yorkers Vampire Weekend, at first sight, the typical American college boys, with theirs clean faces and freshly ironed Ralph Lauren shirt.
At the time this LP, the debut of the quartet, had been out for a few months, but its catchy tunes and its Caribbean rhythms made him ideal for my nap under the beach umbrella.
What I appreciated once of this disc was the freshness of certain sounds, which were characterized by rhythms, as many say, Afro-pop, but they overlap to some discrete rounds guitar of strokesian memory.
Let's start by saying that Contra, although for anything less than its predecessor, probably will not like that first disc for those who just do not have appreciated.
The peculiarities of Vampire Weekend, in fact, prove to be intact from the beginning of this effort their second record: Horchata is the name of the first track, but also that of a drink (usually exotic) as a pretext by singer Ezra Koenig to bring you in a vortex of summer memories and African drums.
White Sky is another very nice song, in which Ezra speaks of his Manatthan, showing the admiration he feels for his city but also the ease of his group to create songs with simple but rousing choruses.
The speed, with the third track Holiday, begins to rise. California English is an atypical song for the group, in which the voice is modulated in part: he needs some listening to be assimilated, but is revealed in my opinion one of the best parts of the record.
Another atypical song is Taxi Cab, which together with the track that closes this LP, is the first example of pseudo ballad attributed to the four New Yorkers.
Even after listening to the first half of the disc, however, it seems clear that the main ingredients, the sounds of the group, are not changed, they have only been shuffled more wisely, or at least differently, not to create the usual "soup heated".
The album is less immediate than its predecessor, because of the arrangements more sophisticated and the more sudden changes of time. The guitars have decreased, leaving more work for the synth, but keep intact the reference to ethnic sounds that breathed debut.
This love of African rhythms is confirmed by the importance it has in the record then the drum: it reveals itself as the real backbone of the songs from Vampire Weekend, who queued up to turn the guitar into an instrument of percussion often added busy with pen and decided. The single Cousins is a clear proof of what I just said, and, probably, one of the most beautiful and characteristic tracks of the entire discography of the group. 8
