ARCTIC MONKEYS - SUCK IT AND SEE

A meno di due anni dall'uscita del controverso Humbug, ecco arrivare la nuova fatica discografica degli Arctic Monkeys, che porta il misterioso e beffardo titolo di Suck It And See. Se Humbug era come una caramella dura fuori e morbida dentro, SIAS pare dal titolo essere un dolciume molto più indefinito, e per rendersene conto occorre, appunto, "succhiarlo e vedere".
Ecco la mia recensione per Arts Club di questo disco, da leggere in attesa della data bolognese di inizio settembre con cui gli Arctic, il 3 del mese, cercheranno di bissare il successo di critica e pubblico ottenuto col concerto del 26 gennaio 2010 al Palasharp di Milano.

ARCTIC MONKEYS - SUCK IT AND SEE (2011)



Less than two years after the controversial Humbug, here comes the brand new Arctic Monkeys record , with the the mysterious and ironic title of Suck It and See. If Humbug was an hard outside and soft centre sweet , SIAS seems to be, accomplishing the title, a much more indefinite candy, and to appreciate this you got to, in fact, "suck it and see."
Here's my review of this album for Arts Club, read this waiting the gig in the beginning of September in Bologna in which Arctic, on 3r of the month, will try to repeat the success of critics and audiences got in the concert of January 26th 2010 in Milan Palasharp.

THE VACCINES - WHAT DID YOU EXPECT FROM THE VACCINES?

Eccoci arrivati a recensire l’ennesima next big thing britannica, in un mercato che ne è ormai saturo. Questa volta però, parte dell’hype che si è creato intorno alla band è tutto sommato lecito, nonostante i ragazzi in questione prendano subito le distanze da esso chiamando furbescamente il loro debutto What Did You Expect From The Vaccines.

This time, however, part of the hype created around the band can be pretty lawful, despite the boys in question take immediately distanced itself from it by cunnigly calling their debut What Did You Expect From The Vaccines.

E' uscito un numero speciale di Arts Club, quello in cui si tirano le somme dell'anno musicale appena trascorso. Io ho avuto il difficile compito di stabilire i migliori album, l'artista meglio vestito e il miglior live a cui ho partecipato durante questo 2010. A voi il compito di commentare il mio insindacabile giudizio.

Posto qui una mia recensione dell'ultimo disco degli Interpol, fatta per il solito Arts Club che, dato il successo ottenuto, è stato integrato a pieno titolo nella sezione musicale di Paper Street.

Here you have my review of the last Interpol album, as usually made for Arts Club, that finally has been fully integrated into the music section of Paper Street.

WAVVES - KING OF THE BEACH

Dopo il tremendo pasticcio del Primavera dell'anno scorso, Wavves, indiscusso paladino dello shitgaze made in USA, prova ancora a salire sulla cresta dell'hype con un nuovo e interessante album, King Of The Beach.
Già dal nome, si intuisce che anche in questa terza fatica di Nathan Williams gli echi surf faranno capolino, tra ritmi punk-noise e sperimentazioni psichedeliche.
Il disco è in uscita qui da noi il 27 di Agosto, ma l'artista ha già lasciato circolare su Pitchfork il brano Post-Acid, che pare testimoniare l'abbandono del suono lo-fi che lo caratterizzava fin dalle origini.
Questa sensazione viene confermata da altri nuovi brani reperibili in rete, tra i quali spicca la title track King Of The Beach per freschezza e ispirazione.



Degna di nota è anche la copertina dell'LP, deliziosamente trash.



After the terrible mess of Primavera Festival last year, Wavves, undisputed champion of shitgaze made in USA, try going up on the crest of hype with an interesting new album, King Of The Beach.
Just with the record name, you realize that even in this third effort from Nathan Williams echoes of surf pop are present, between noise-punk rhythms and psychedelic experimentation.
The album is coming out in Italy on August 27th, but is already available on Pitchfork the track Post-Acid, which seems to testify to the abandonment of the lo-fi sound that originally characterized Wavves sound.
This feeling is confirmed by some new songs available online, among them the title track King Of The Beach, the best one for freshness and inspiration.

Worthy of note is also the cover of the LP, deliciously trashy.

GLI ASCOLTI ESTIVI DI COOLNESS SURFER

L'estate, nonostante il brutto tempo degli ultimi giorni, è ormai in dirittura d'arrivo. Non c'è quindi momento migliore di questo per introdurvi a quella che sarà la probabile colonna sonora della calda coolness summer.
Gli ascolti musicali, soprattutto nella stagione estiva, sono fondamentali per catalizzare momenti della propria vita, che siano giornate passate a guardare deludenti partite di mondiali in tv oppure caldi pomeriggi in spiagge assolate. A ruota vi propongo gli album che mi faranno probabilmente compagnia nei prossimi tre mesi. Probabilmente se ne aggiungeranno altri, ma voglio qui soffermarmi su quelli più adatti al mood vacanziero.

The Drums - The Drums
I drums, il cui disco d'esordio è uscito qui nei primi giorni di giugno, sono come sapete tra i pupilli di questo blog. Con il loro primo omonimo album non deludono le aspettative, confezionando un LP con dodici pezzi (alcuni già conosciuti) conditi da uno stile vintage ormai inconfondibile, che tra coretti surf-rock e ritmiche visceralmente post-punk conservano sempre un hook melodico quasi irresistibile.

Perchè mi accompagnerà durante l'estate
Un disco letteralmente in grado di farti saltellare. Magari in spiaggia, correndo a perdifiato, e urlando a squarciagola "Wake up, it's a beautiful morning...". Come nel celebre video di Let's Go Surfing, loro vero cavallo di battaglia.

Surfer Blood - Astro Coast
I Surfer Blood sono giovani ragazzi venuti dalla Florida, giunti agli onori delle cronache musicali grazie all'azzeccato singolo Swim, che sembra Needle in the Camel's Eye coverizzata dai Weezer. Ascoltando il loro album, ci si accorge che le influenze sono comunque molteplici, e spaziano da quelle Weezeriane del singolo di debutto (che caratterizzano gli episodi più riusciti) a quelle noise alla Sonic Youth, di pezzi come Take It Easy.

Perchè mi accompagnerà durante l'estate
Già il nome del gruppo e quello del disco (tale Astro Coast) ne suggeriscono l'ascolto in calde giornate al mare. I riff surf rock, sempre molto catchy, e i testi estivo-adolescenziali sono poi una conferma dell'attitude estiva di questo disco.

Vampire Weekend - Contra
Il secondo disco dei prodigiosi newyorkesi Vampire Weekend, unisce ai freschi suoni afro-pop del primo lavoro una manciata di inserti elettronici che evolvono i ritmi del gruppo senza farne perdere i tratti distintivi. I testi sono come sempre ironiche riflessioni da studente universitario dell'upper class americana, e, come le canzoni del gruppo, o si amano o si odiano. Coolness Surfer li ama alla follia.

Perchè mi accompagnerà durante l'estate
Nonostante il disco sia uscito nelle fredde giornate di gennaio, i suoni caldi e i temi di questo disco (Horchata e Holiday su tutte)lo rendono perfetto per ascolti intensivi nei mesi più afosi e tranquilli dell'anno.

Infine qualche consiglio sugli album in uscita.


L'album (in uscita il 27 di luglio) che potrebbe sicuramente diventare un ascolto intensivo nel prossimo mese di agosto è sicuramente Crazy For You di Best Coast, all'anagrafe Bethany Cosentino. Le melodie estive e lisergiche della giovane cantante mi hanno già ammaliato grazie anche a grandi performance nei primi festival estivi. Pezzi come When I'm With You e The Sun Was High (So Was I) sono poi perfette sonorizzazioni di tranquille sbronze estive e amori appassionati che non continueranno. Disco licenziato Mexican Summer.



The summer, despite the bad weather of recent days, is now in the pipeline. There's no better time than now to introduce you to what will be the likely soundtrack to the hot summer of the coolness.
The music, especially in summer, it's also a key to catalyzing moments of our lives, like disappointing days spent watching world cup football matchs on TV or hot afternoons in sunny beaches. I will propose the albums that I probably love and listen in the next three months. Probably more LP's will be added, but I want to dwell on those because of their holiday mood.

The Drums - The Drums
The drums, whose debut album was released here in early June, are, as you know, the pupils of this blog. With their first self-titled album they haven't disappointed expectations, tailoring an LP with twelve pieces (some already known) topped by a vintage style now unmistakable, defined by surf-rock choruses and visceral post-punk rhythms, but still with almost irresistible melodic hooks.

Why it will accompany me during the summer
A record that can literally make you jump. Maybe on the beach, running at breakneck speed, and loudly shouting "Wake up, it's a beautiful morning ...". As in the famous video of Let's Go Surfing, their true workhorse.

Sufer Blood - Astro Coast
Surfer Blood are four young boys who came from Florida; they reached the headlines of alternative music charts with lead single Swim, which seems Needle In The Camel's Eye coverized by Weezer. Listening to their album, one realizes that the influences are still many, ranging from the Weezerian ones of their debut single (featured in the most successful episodes of the lp) to the noise Sonic Youth in tracks like Take It Easy.

Why it will accompany me during the summer
The name of the group and that of the record (Astro Coast) already suggest the listening near the sea on warm days. The surf rock riffs, always very catchy, and the teen-friendly lyrics are a confirmation of the summer attitude of this album.

Vampire Weekend - Contra
The second record of prodigious Yorkers Vampire Weekend, combining the fresh sounds of Afro-pop of the first album with handful inserts of electronic rhythms, that develop the work of the band without making them lose their distinctive features. The lyrics are as always ironic reflections from the upper class American college student, and like the songs of the pop group, you can hate them or love them. Coolness Surfer loves them to madness.

Why will accompany me during the summer
Although the disc debouted in the cold days of January, the warm sounds of the songs of this album (Horchata and Holiday above all) make it perfect for intensive listening in months of quiet and sultry.

Finally some advice on upcoming albums
The album (out on July 27th) that could definitely be an intensive listen in the coming month of August is definitely Crazy For You by Best Coast, aka Bethany Cosentino. The lisergic summer melodies of the young singer already captivated me also with great performances in the first summer festivals. Songs like When I'm With You and The Sun Was High (So Was I) are also perfect for design with sounds quite summer hangovers and passionate loves that will not continue. MI AMI 2010: IL FESTIVAL DELLA MUSICA BELLA E DEI BACI

L'inizio dell'estate fa da perfetta cornice al mood festivaliero.
Come potrete immaginare, non mi sono certo lasciato sfuggire l'occasione di partecipare alla sesta edizione di quella celebrazione di musica alternativa tutta italiana che risponde al nome di MI AMI. E' stata una gran festa, lo devo ammettere.
E nonostante la cornice della maggior parte di questi eventi dia spesso l'impressione di voler attirare più l'ambiente alternativo poser e presenzialista che quello realmente interessanto ai suoni nostrani emergenti e di qualità, direi che quest'anno la musica ha vinto, ha fatto da padrona.
Lo si capiva già dalla set list, intendiamoci. Si spazia dagli istrionici Bud Spencer Blues Explosion, agli esordienti Buzz Aldrin, ai nomi di punta delle serate del Pertini. Delle proposte musicali più interessanti che ci ha donato quest' inizio anno il nostro paese, manca forse il solo Samuel Katarro.
Se volete sapere nei dettagli com' è andata, non vi resta che leggere l'ultimo numero di Arts Club, in cui vi è una pagina (la numero 3) completamente dedicata al festival e da me interamente curata. Ho, tra le altre cose, anche fatto un resoconto dettagliato delle esibizioni più belle e particolari a cui ho assistito.

The beginning of summer is the perfect setting for the festival mood.
As you can imagine, I haven't certainly missed the opportunity to participate the sixth edition of the celebration of alternative all-Italian music, who answer the name of MI AMI. It 'was a big party, I must admit.
And despite the setting of most of these events often give the impression of wanting to attract more alternative posers that persons who are really interested in our good emerging sounds, I would say that this year's music has won, has made host.
You could tell right from the set list, mind you. It ranges from the histrionics Bud Spencer Blues Explosion, newcomers Buzz Aldrin, and the deans of the evenings in Pertini. There are the most interesting musical proposals that gave us this beginning of the year our country, perhaps the only missing is Samuel Katarro.
If you want to know in detail how is gone, you just have to read the latest issue of Arts Club, where there is a page (number 3) completely dedicated to the festival and written by me. I, among other things, made a detailed account of the most beautiful and unique performances I attended.
We have to begin a summer of festivals, beautiful music, and kisses.

Questa settimana su Arts Club si trattano gli argomenti più disparati, e si passa da un interessante profilo sul duca bianco a un resoconto dettagliato di una serata nel celebre locale da cui prende il nome il suddetto giornale.
Si parla poi di Dum Dum, Girls, The National e vi è una sezione molto più corposa di recensioni.

Arts Club: on-line il secondo numero.

Esce oggi il secondo numero di Arts Club, magazine quindicinale con cui ho iniziato a collaborare, allegato alla sezione musicale di Paper Street.
Questo numero è dedicato alla memoria di Ian Curtis, visto che è in uscita mercoledì 19 maggio, il giorno dopo il 30° anniversario della sua morte.
In questo numero ci sono molti articoli interessanti, ma vi suggerisco innanzitutto la visione dei 2 scritti dal sottoscritto, che sono entrambi a pagina 4.
Il primo articolo è una riflessione sui frontman che sempre più spesso improvvisano un avventura solista, il secondo è una recensione dell'ultimo, sorprendente, album dei Foals.

Today comes the second issue of Arts Club, fortnightly magazine in which I began to work, supplementing the music section of Paper Street.
This issue is dedicated to the memory of Ian Curtis, as it is released Wednesday, May 19, the day after the 30th anniversary of his death.
In this issue there are many interesting articles, but I suggest watching the two written by myself, who are both on page 4.
The first article is a discussion on frontman that even more often improvise a solo adventure, the second is a review of the last, surprising, Foals album.

CONCERT REPORT: 28.04.2010 CRYSTAL CASTLES @ MAGAZZINI GENERALI (MI)

Arrivo con amici ai magazzini generali in discreto anticipo per godermi appieno l’unica data dei Crystal Castles in Italia, ma non riusciamo comunque ad assistere all’esibizione dell’opener Tim Ghost.
C’è parecchia gente, già nello spazio adiacente al locale: tutto questo non stupisce, perché i Crystal Castles hanno saputo guadagnarsi grande fama negli ultimi tre anni, passando velocemente dal fenomeno Myspace alla firma per una sussidiaria della Universal.
L’ultimo mercoledì di aprile si rivela una giornata molto calda, e ciò si dimostra fin da subito un dato poco positivo all’interno di un locale come i magazzini, gremito come nelle grandi occasioni.
Riesco anche a scambiare un paio di parole con Ethan prima del concerto e mi sembra disponibile, anche se non molto lucido: mi dice che spera di riuscire a tirare fuori un gran live.
Ho giusto il tempo di dare un’occhiata al consueto spazio merchandising (faccio subito mia una delle loro “Madonna” t-shirt che ho sempre adorato), quando Alice e Ethan salgono sul palco, accompagnati da un batterista.
Il duo di Toronto parte con Fainting Spells, brano di apertura del loro nuovo omonimo disco. Alice Glass dimostra fin da subito un carisma e una personalità invidiabili: gli occhi del pubblico sono tutti verso di lei, anche se la sua voce nei live si dimostra molto più alterata del previsto. I suoni di Ethan si dimostrano una perfetta cornice ai movimenti ossessivi di Alice, che nonostante i suoi ventun’anni sfodera una presenza scenica da rocker navigata.
Il secondo brano è il magistrale Baptism, pezzo migliore del loro nuovo (poco più che discreto) lavoro e che, a mio avviso, avrebbe dovuto rappresentare l’essenza musicale di questi nuovi Crystal Castles.
Il pubblico dimostra di pensarla come me sulla suddetta canzone, e la accoglie con grande calore. A questo punto il gruppo sfodera un altro jolly, la magnifica Courtship Dating (conosciuta ai più in quanto colonna sonora del telefilm d’oltremanica Skins) tratta dal proprio esordio.
Successivamente vi è un trittico di nuovi pezzi: Celestica, Doe Deer e Emphaty. Di queste tre, l’ultima mi ha veramente convinto solo nella sua versione live, più energica e grezza.
A questo punto la situazione all’interno del locale è già diventata ingestibile, grazie al pogo rovente ma soprattutto al crowdsurfing di Alice, che inizia a buttarsi più volte tra il pubblico delle prime file facendosi tenere a stento dalla security.
La folla dimostra di apprezzare, partecipa ancora più attivamente all’esecuzione dei pezzi e quando arriva il momento di Alice Practice (suonata dopo Air War e Crimewave, che rimane secondo me l'episodio migliore della intera discografia del duo) ne urla anch’esso la ormai conosciutissima melodia.
Dopo un altro riempipista tratto dal loro nuovo lavoro (la secondo me quasi anonima Intimate) e meno di un ora di frenetico live, il gruppo ci lascia, con un po’ di amaro in bocca, già in attesa dell’encore.
Dopo il veloce ritorno sul palco il gruppo propone al pubblico l’energica Black Panther e il B-Side Yes No.
Nonostante la acustica non proprio ineccepibile (anche causa posizionamento casse forse un po’ troppo creativo) e la breve durata dell’esibizione, i Crystal Castles hanno dato prova di saper creare un live coinvolgente e divertente. Alice Glass poi è una forza della natura, e dopo il suddetto concerto credo abbia fatto breccia in molti cuori (tra cui il mio).
Peccato per quel secondo album un po’ sconclusionato, che avrebbe forse dovuto seguire di più le ultime intuizioni musicali dei meno celebri HEALTH.



I arrive with friends at Magazzini generali quite early to fully enjoy the only italian date of Crystal Castles, but I still fail to attend the exhibition of the opener Tim Ghost.
There is a lot of people already in the space adjacent to the club: this is not surprising, because the Crystal Castles have been able to earn great fame in the last three years, moving quickly from MySpace phenomenon to sign for a subsidiary of Universal.
The last Wednesday of April, reveals a very hot temperature, and this proves to be quite disappointing in a place like the magazzini, crowded as in the big occasions.
I can also exchange a few words with Ethan before the concert and it seems friendly, though not very lucid: he says he hopes to be able to pull off a great live.
I just have time to check out the usual merchandising space (where I buy one of their "Madonna" t-shirt I've always loved), when Alice and Ethan go up on stage, accompanied by a drummer.
The duo of Toronto begin with Fainting Spells, the opening track from their new self-titled disc. Alice Glass shows immediately an enviable charisma and personality: the eyes of the public are all for her, although her voice in live shows is much more affected than expected. The sounds of Ethan prove a perfect backdrop to the movements of obsessive Alice, who, despite her twenty-one years of age, shows off a stage presence of real rocker.
The second track is the masterful Baptism, best track of their new (slightly more than adequate) LP and is the expression, in my opinion, of what should be the musical essence of the new Crystal Castles.
The crowd clearly agree with me concerning this song, and welcomes it with great fervour. At this point the group pulls out another wild card, the magnificent Courtship Dating (better known as the soundtrack of the british tv show Skins) from their debut album.
Then there is a triptych of new pieces: Celestica, Doe Deer and Emphaty. The third one really convinced me only in its live version, that is more energetic and raw.
At this point the situation within the club has already become unmanageable expecially for Alice crowdsurfing. The singer in fact begins to jump repeatedly between the front rows of the audience, hardly kept from the club security.
The crowd seems to enjoy and partecipate more actively: when begins Alice Practice (played after Air War and Crimewave, which remains in my opinion the best episode of the entire discography of the duo) it also screams the now well-known melody.
After another floorfiller from their new record (that anonymous track called Intimate) and less than an hour of frenetic live, the band leaves us with a bitter taste in mouth, already waiting for encore.
After the quick return on stage the duo offers the public the energic Black Panther and the B-Side Yes No.
Despite the sound not quite flawless (due to a speaker placement a bit too creative) and the short duration of the exhibition, Crystal Castles have demonstrated their ability to create an engaging and entertaining live. Alice Glass is also a force of nature, and after this concert I think he made a open breach in many hearts (including mine).
Too bad that this second album is a bit rambling, perhaps it should have followed the last musical intuitions of the less famous band HEALTH.
