by Mattia Fossati

The world is in constant motion, the change is getting faster, and technology, an integral part of our lives, has become essential and has open in all fields, new roads for which no end in sight.
The fields of design and architecture have always used (and certainly contributed) technology development, especially with the use of new materials and their related production techniques.
For some years now have taken on increasing importance (within design) the so-called "Smart Materials", high performance materials able to provide services outside of the norm, these materials become "Smart" because of their special composition of substances or for their additivity with other materials, or through the inclusion, within them, of digital devices.
The materials linked to the "smart" are lots and the applications in general design are virtually endless.
Just think of the piezoelectric material, which create energy when compressed to Shape memory materials, which always return to the initial form or that the user wished to impress, to those that control the pH, rather than the body temperature or perspiration, or those antibacterial and odor (usually through the inclusion of silver ions); or even the self-cleaning glass (thanks to the presence of titanium dioxide). And finally, those of which I will deal specifically, and that lend themselves to more "playful" applications, the materials include thermochromic inks, able to change color according to temperature and return to the original state when the reaction ends.
Recently, hundreds of designers played with the features of this materials, from
the most renowned to the most unknown, and the results were not always exciting, but they certainly helped to open new scenarios and new worlds with emotional capacities that involve a material and the relationship between you and it.
Just think of the concrete "Solid Poetry" created by S. Happle and F. Molenschot of Dutch group Droog Design, the group already well known for its research activities placed and objects become, in the course of a few years, "classics" (as the "85 Lamps" or "Milk Bottle Lamp").
Cement created by two designers react with rain (and more just with water) open up to reveal a texture of floral silkscreen directly on cement with thermochromic ink.
Another product worth mentioning, although still under development, which exploits the same principle, is the cloth "underfull" of designer Kristine Bjaadal, who always takes care rather than a product line, the experience that the object it's able to give you.
The cloth in question completely rethinks and redesigns the dynamics revolve around the classic incident table: overthrow drinks, water, wine, etc ... ..
When a drink is reversed on the tablecloth displays a texture representative of the butterflies which then turns an accident into something fascinating and fun.
The artist Shi Yuan, however, has set up, thanks to this technology, a paper wall represented by a flower that opens and closes depending on the room temperature.
Probably still many products of the same kind are being developed at the same time I write.
All that remains is to observe and see how far we can push to give new expression to objects and materials of all days, and how far we can exploit this 'intelligence' that we are giving to the various aforementioned materials to improve our lives and that of others.

THE COURTEENERS - FALCON

You Overdid It Doll è il primo singolo dell’album.

We are facing the second LP of Mancunian guys Courteeners, pupils of his majesty Morrissey.
The charisma of arrogant frontman of this band (and markedly Gallagherian, like the rest his look) has always been a double-edged weapon. Liam Fray, in fact, because of its genuine arrogance, tends to generate huge expectations against the band's record releases, which are then promptly rejected. Let's be clear right away. St Jude, the Courteeners debut, was not a bad album. He was very direct, and with some great singles. It was appended to the style of many groups brit-rock era, but had neither the verve nor the maturity necessary to erect the Courteeners as new messiahs of Manchester, as too many magazines had predicted.
This Falcon seems to be more mature and rational.
The sound of the group seem to change and the pieces are much softer and often have parts of piano. There are several orchestral and anthemical arrangements, that wink in the last Elbows, putting aside the Libertines riffs that characterized the debut with the intent to embrace more audience and increase it's credibility as stadium indie-band. Their intention is, however, succeeded only in part.
As already happened in St Jude, the first pieces of the disc are more tasty. The opening track is, for example, perhaps the best of the record. The majestic The opener, already from the first chorus shows a double declaration of love, longing and respect to Manchester and to an hypothetical woman who lives far from this city. The admiration of the band towards the environment that gave birth is a recurring theme in many parts of the album, but, moreover, the Courteeners are truly revered by crowds of their city. Take Over The World, in line with a text that seems to want to erect the band to Olympus of rock bands, is musically a perfect anthem for those who sing their hearts out in rooms crowded. Has an excellent growth and an enviable but repetitive chorus. The subsequent track, Cross My Heart And Hope To Fly, is in line with the sound of the previous one and shows also a good care over the use of melody. But you can already guess that the lyrics are quite simple, although they have changed a bit theme compared to the first disc. You Overdid It Doll is the first single of the album. The refrain is very catchy and the piece has a good dose of hard groove (in pure Kasabian style) that was missing in the debut album. At this point the quality of work falls enough, as evidenced by songs such as The Rest Of The World Has Gone Home, an acoustic song that enhances the voice of Fray, but is also less isnspired than How Come?, a similar ballad of the first album.
Falcon is a good album that lovers of this kind of music will certainly love to hear for a while. But it's not a masterpiece, or the certificate of maturity that maybe Liam Fray wanted to show the whole world. The repetitiveness of certain tracks, and some decline of quality in the final songs will not preclude the Courteeners to fill stadiums in their Manchester, but will not allow them, at least for now, to take possession of largest audiences in the world as claimed in one of the songs of this LP. 7

CONCERT REPORT: 22.02.2010 AC/DC @ ANZ STADIUM (SYDNEY)

Grazie Nox!

"Alright!
Altri pezzi degni di nota sono i classici “You shook me all night long”, “TNT”, “Let there be rock” e soprattutto i due pezzi di chiusura: il loro inno “Highway to Hell” e “For those about to rock…we salute you”.
Rock on!"

I post now the tasty and appreciated report that my friend Nox sent me about the live of the great AC / DC, held in late February in Sydney. Thank you Nox!

"Alright! Time has come for this blog to make a leap into the unknown, after the latter succesful times; let’s go international then!
The first big international event is already tasty! What you are going to read is a report of the last concert of the AC-DC Black Ice Tour 2010 in Australia, their adoptive motherland...and is there a best place other than Sydney, the city in which they began rockin’?!?
Premise: who’s speaking has been and currently is in Australia (in Sydney as above) and, in “Coolness Surfer” fashion one of my objectives in this trip was searching for some cool stuff. Now, let’s think for a moment about Australia: what kind of cool stuff comes after surfing on the ocean, hot blondes in dream beaches, kangaroos and koalas? I’d definitely answer: AC-DC!!...I was searching for some cool stuff at my arrival, especially gigs and concerts, and I’ve been totally satisfied!
The location is the Sydney Olympic Park, ANZ Stadium (huge and with a perfect organization): sold out as expected of course. As soon as I get there I am shocked (but not that much) by the average age, pretty high, and most of all by the composition of the audience. The most of the spectators are whole families with small kids (also girls): this aussie guys really know how to educate their lads and lasses!
The concert is opened at the very beginning with a bang of young surf-punkers, whose name I don’t remember and who did not impress me at all: same usual California garage band (even if they are Australian): but here we are in Australia and there’s no space nor time for disappointments!
Next guys on the stage are Wolfmother, young rockers from Sydney themselves, but with a great talent and taste and a lot of remarkable musical influences: when you listen to the screaming and tearing guitar of their leader Andrew Stockdale, you surely bring back your mind and soul to Jimmy Page (my favourite guitar player by the way), Brian May, and, of course, Angus Young. These young guns, authors of two excellent albums so far, start teasing the audience leading it to blowing coming of their “auncle” and, even if not full yet, the arena starts enjoying this awesome night of rock, with songs that are now classics like “Woman”, “New Moon Rising” and “Joker & the Thief”.
My judgement is excellent, especially if we consider their young age; in the last times it has been one of the bands that I most appreciated and now I estimate them even more.
I’d like to stress that some days before, they played for free in the Sydney’s Apple Store, crowded inside in and out, in George Street, in the middle of skyscrapers, stops and malls.
After their great performance it’s time for us to bear a half-an-hour break during which the expectations rise and rise towards the skies, while the arena gets completely full. The scenery looks like awesome and just looking at it our great expectations grow even more, and eventually they are totally satisfied!
The entry on the stage of Angus Young & Co. is anticipated by a cartoon-style clip full of fire, flame, metal and nasty women and then...here they are!..the fall on the scene in the middle of fire, smoke, bursts and blows and start their show with “Rock’n’Roll Train”, first single from their last album, good songs even if not at their highest levels (just because you always expect the best from them), but still enthralling since the first riffs, and excellent in order to prepare the rock night that is waiting for us.
Among the first songs it the great “Back in Black” suddenly appears and right after, a song with a particular meaning for AC-DC fans: I’m talking about “The Jack”, classic old-time blues that they wrote in their earlier years (together with Bon Scott); the song has an explicit sexual meaning and now it’s the moment when the ladies are unleashing their feminine skills on the screen with no shame at all: the old and balding Angus and Brian still have their incredible sex-appeal!
The concert is an endless crescendo, with the other three members (among them there is also Malcolm Young, guitarist and author of many songs, but obscured by his brother Angus) set aside (also scenically): the stage and the audience have eyes just for Brian and Angus, the first with its warm but biting voice, the latter with its black Gibson SG, in its usual high-school suit. Its riffs, solos and moves on the stage are something that every single rock fan should experience in its life; he does not show its age and shocks me because of its scenic and technical ability.
Other remarkable songs are the classics “You Shook Me all Night Long”, “TNT”, “Let There Be Rock” and especially the two closing songs: their anthem “Highway to Hell” and “For Those About to Rock...We Salute You!”
And it was the greatest greeting indeed, an awesome end for what it was possibly the most amazing concert in my life, in an incredible location and with a wonderful audience, and , most all, in a dream-like country. AC-DC homage their adoptive city and Sydney had welcome them in the most warm-hearted way possible.
A special congratulation goes to the organization and especially to the people that arrived as a horde from all over Australia and beyond (hotels and hostels fully booked for a whole week, tried on my own skin!) in order to venerate their idols.
A special greeting to all the readers, with the wish of being again an appreciated international guest for some other cool stuff!
Rock on!!"

THE DRUMS - SUMMERTIME! EP

I might learn to hate you, lady. One week and you’re acting crazy. I might have to hate you, baby . This is what I thought it would be. This is the saddest summer ever”).

The drums sounds like the Smiths arrived suddenly in a California beach. Joy Division with the passion of surfing.
Well, at first glance they might seem the classical Mancunian sad guys that twenty years ago would have crossed the gates of Factory Records with a contract in hand.
But they are Americans, indeed, but with a passion (mentioned several times in interviews by vocalist Johnathan Pierce) of Morrissey and the New Wave.
And so listening to the first song of the EP, the beautiful Let's go surfing, you immediately thought of an incurable nostalgic who wants to leave the gray land of Albion to go surfing in some remote place with sea, thus transforming its depression into happiness.
The whistles of this track make you lost your head for the band at first listen.
Make you mine again is a pearl, which embroiders on stilemmi rock from the 50's a melody true bull's eye.
Do not be a jerk, Johnny leads to the first Vampire Weekend, but the text is more reflective and melancholy and with dreamy moods.
After Submarine, which looks like a Cure song with inserts of Beach Boys, we come to the slow Down by the water, in my opinion the less inspired track on the disc.
Saddest Summer is the masterpiece of 'EP, almost a manifesto for the sad boys come from Florida. As is clear from the title, has nothing to do with the classic song about a summer love, and confirms the obsession of the group to the stories unhappy man / woman and the summer sun ( "Summer's just beginning, baby. I might learn to hate you, lady. One week and you're acting crazy. I might have to hate you, baby. This is what I thought it would be. This is the saddest summer ever "). Despite the pessimistic text, the chorus is so catchy that could be a big wheel.
The last piece of the record, I Felt Stupid, is again valuable. Here the most obvious influences (expecially in the great chorus) are some piece of Strangeways Here We Come, but you can see a few winks here and there of New Orders tracks.
We are dealing with seven potential singles: many indie bands of today would kill to sound like this in a debut EP. Now, we must wait the long playing of the group, out this year. But if you see the good days in the morning... 10

BLOOD RED SHOES - LIGHT IT UP

Here we are finally talking about the new single by Blood Red Shoes, Light It Up, out this month and the second extract from their new album coming out in March.
The band from Brighton, composed of only two members, jumped to hit the headlines thanks to a very good first album (released a couple of years ago) accompanied by several singles.
The recipe of their music proves to be the same. Light It Up is a bit fast, the drums pounding and prominent, and as the songs of onset does not breach immediately but grows with each listen.
Their formation, similar to the White Stripes, but with swapped roles, has also remained intact: the vocal parts are sung by both components, Steven and Laura-Mary, which alternate depending on the needs of the song.
The guitar gives the song her taste punk-garage which had already started, for example, in a It's Getting Boring by the sea, but here the group of verses is one of the most melodic born from the duo.
According to the same Steven, the piece is characterized by a strong groove in the verses, a crescendo that reaches its culmination in the chaotic fury of the chorus, a formula that refers to certain parts of the early Pixies.
The video, for its part, transmits the feeling of good explosive tension between images of torches and forests at night.

Blood Red Shoes - Light it up

Sreong changes of rhythm are revealed as in their best songs, even though we are not faced with a bigwig as could be the I Wish I Was Someone Better from the first record.

DELPHIC - ACOLYTE

Acolyte was one of the most anticipated debuts of this start of 2010. It's been at least six months that the hype around this band continues to rise, mainly due to the peculiarity of their videos and the continued inclusion on lists and charts on the next big thing of the year just begun.
Since chosing the label distribution of the LP, the French Kitsuné, the group makes its electronics workhorse. From the first track of this record, Clarion Call, stand subtleties of sound are reminiscent of fellow New Order, although there are no peaks that characterize many quality songs of Award Winning Sumner-Morris-Hook.
The second and third track are two of the singles from this album. Doubt quilt on a 80's melodic line sung in Klaxons style. This Momentary is a continuous increasing hypnotic, and is known to most people for inclusion in one of the latest Kitsune compilation and a music video, filmed in Chernobyl, incredibly fascinating.
Red Lights gives us an intro that could remind more of the first Calvin Harris, but then surprises us by becoming a trip where the Kraftwerkian electronic influences are becoming increasingly obvious. Acolyte, the title track, emphasizes the homage to the group of Dusseldorf. More than eight minutes of electronic madness, this conceal the true manifest of musical intent of Delphic. It's since the times of the wonderful La femme d'argent by Air that I had not heard of a carpet of algid synthesized sounds so convincing. Halcyon is the last single released, and it is in my opinion the track more easy listening in the disc. Could well be one of the less inspired songs of Power, Corruption & Lies by New Order. Submission has a guitar riff that makes the track extremely enjoyable. Counterpoint resume musically stylistic canons of the title track, but it is more immersive. The quality of the last two songs is partially inferior, but not succeed in ruining the dreamy atmosphere that gives this record. An album that, although not a masterpiece and not really personal and original, does not disappoint the expectations raised. Lovers of electronic music and experimentation will meet to hear and listen to it. 8

CINERECENSIONE: (500) DAYS OF SUMMER

Tom è laureato in architettura e inguaribile romantico.
The Boy With The Arab Strap.

As are the days of Valentine's Day and I've never been an incurable romantic, take off immediately the slightest doubt about the nature of this film. (500) Days of Summer is NOT a love story, and this will be pointed out also by the narrator at the beginning of the film.
Is, indeed, what more can be far from the classic romantic comedy, and from that banal and cloying romanticism that Italian cinema, comsumption son of Moccia and Muccino, continues to administer us.
This film is the story of a man and a woman. Tom has a degree in architecture and is a incurable romantic. Summer is a charming nonconformist who does not believe in love. Both, at the end of the film, should think again about their positions, although not in the way everyone expected.
The 500 days introduced in the title, are the one where Summer has been a part of life for Tom, and are narrated without respecting the chronological order of events and with a particular emphasis on first person view of the situation by the architect.
Without prejudging anything to those who have not yet seen the film, I can only say that this is a perfect painting of contradiction that often arises between what is fantastically idealized and what it stands out.
The film, in recounting the meeting between the two protagonists, and any conseguences, proves rich with memorable characters and funny scenes (the scene of the nickname of Summer, for example, rip anyone a laugh.)
Also, the soundtrack is definitely above average. You can tell from the beginning, from the enticing headlines lulled by the voice of Regina Spektor to the subsequent sagacious quote from The Boy With The Arab Strap.
They there are a couple of pieces of the Smiths, sponsored by the visceral passion of the two protagonists for this group.
Even the mood of Tom are perfectly punctuated by the songs played in the film, from his delight after the first night with Summer (which is feted with a lovely dance to the tune of "You Make My Dreams Daryl Hall) to the rage of the last days apostrophate with the notes of Vagabond by Wolfmother.
The film is shot very well, quotes of the film to the cinema he loves (one for all, The Graduate) are wasted. The city of Los Angeles, the scene of the events of the movie, is shown in its more quiet and less familiar to most.
The main actors are perfect in their part. The cynical Zoey Deschanel, if not married to Ben Gibbard of Death Cab, could be the love of my life.
Eventually you will find yourself in front of a great film. Original, and unlikely to forget because of his way of telling things and its atmosphere. A lightweight and tragicomic film, which, however, we can approach with a degree of reflexivity.
All this must have also appreciated the producers, which have appointed the here debutant, Mark Webb, as director of the next Spiderman, probably successful at the box office around the world.
