ARCTIC MONKEYS - SUCK IT AND SEE (2011)

Less than two years after the controversial Humbug, here comes the brand new Arctic Monkeys record , with the the mysterious and ironic title of Suck It and See. If Humbug was an hard outside and soft centre sweet , SIAS seems to be, accomplishing the title, a much more indefinite candy, and to appreciate this you got to, in fact, "suck it and see."
Here's my review of this album for Arts Club, read this waiting the gig in the beginning of September in Bologna in which Arctic, on 3r of the month, will try to repeat the success of critics and audiences got in the concert of January 26th 2010 in Milan Palasharp.

ARCTIC MONKEYS - SUCK IT AND SEE (2011)Alessandro Blangettihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02378423774154994401noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1088166220407726532.post-74125978472982489922011-06-18T14:57:00.003+02:002012-02-23T16:55:25.061+01:00GIMME 5IVE 4 THE WEEKEND / 18 GIUGNO

Eccoci tornati a questo consueto appuntamento.

Gimme 5ive 4 the Weekend

Here we are, back with this usual appointment.

Gimme 5ive 4 the WeekendAlessandro Blangettihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02378423774154994401noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1088166220407726532.post-10535268557092746172011-06-14T22:33:00.006+02:002011-06-14T22:49:47.906+02:00GIMME 5IVE 4 THE WEEKEND / 11 GIUGNO

Gimme 5ive 4 the Weekend

You can see my playlist of the week clicking on the link below!

Gimme 5ive 4 the WeekendAlessandro Blangettihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02378423774154994401noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1088166220407726532.post-32262957687750436142011-06-05T14:50:00.003+02:002011-06-05T15:14:09.406+02:00GIMME 5 FOR THE WEEKEND

What Did You Expect From The Vaccines.
Come sempre, la verità sta nel mezzo. Buona lettura.

THE VACCINES - WHAT DID YOU EXPECT FROM THE VACCINES?

Here we are again to review the last British sensation, in a saturated market.

The Drums - The Drums

Magari in spiaggia, correndo a perdifiato, e urlando a squarciagola "Wake up, it's a beautiful morning...".

Surfer Blood - Astro Coast

Infine qualche consiglio sugli album in uscita.

Pezzi come When I'm With You e The Sun Was High (So Was I) sono poi perfette sonorizzazioni di tranquille sbronze estive e amori appassionati che non continueranno. Disco licenziato Mexican Summer.

The summer, despite the bad weather of recent days, is now in the pipeline. There's no better time than now to introduce you to what will be the likely soundtrack to the hot summer of the coolness.
The music, especially in summer, it's also a key to catalyzing moments of our lives, like disappointing days spent watching world cup football matchs on TV or hot afternoons in sunny beaches. I will propose the albums that I probably love and listen in the next three months. Probably more LP's will be added, but I want to dwell on those because of their holiday mood.

The Drums - The Drums
The drums, whose debut album was released here in early June, are, as you know, the pupils of this blog. With their first self-titled album they haven't disappointed expectations, tailoring an LP with twelve pieces (some already known) topped by a vintage style now unmistakable, defined by surf-rock choruses and visceral post-punk rhythms, but still with almost irresistible melodic hooks.

Why it will accompany me during the summer
A record that can literally make you jump. Maybe on the beach, running at breakneck speed, and loudly shouting "Wake up, it's a beautiful morning ...". As in the famous video of Let's Go Surfing, their true workhorse.

Sufer Blood - Astro Coast
Surfer Blood are four young boys who came from Florida; they reached the headlines of alternative music charts with lead single Swim, which seems Needle In The Camel's Eye coverized by Weezer. Listening to their album, one realizes that the influences are still many, ranging from the Weezerian ones of their debut single (featured in the most successful episodes of the lp) to the noise Sonic Youth in tracks like Take It Easy.

Why it will accompany me during the summer
The name of the group and that of the record (Astro Coast) already suggest the listening near the sea on warm days. The surf rock riffs, always very catchy, and the teen-friendly lyrics are a confirmation of the summer attitude of this album.

Vampire Weekend - Contra
The second record of prodigious Yorkers Vampire Weekend, combining the fresh sounds of Afro-pop of the first album with handful inserts of electronic rhythms, that develop the work of the band without making them lose their distinctive features. The lyrics are as always ironic reflections from the upper class American college student, and like the songs of the pop group, you can hate them or love them. Coolness Surfer loves them to madness.

Why will accompany me during the summer
Although the disc debouted in the cold days of January, the warm sounds of the songs of this album (Horchata and Holiday above all) make it perfect for intensive listening in months of quiet and sultry.

Finally some advice on upcoming albums
The album (out on July 27th) that could definitely be an intensive listen in the coming month of August is definitely Crazy For You by Best Coast, aka Bethany Cosentino. The lisergic summer melodies of the young singer already captivated me also with great performances in the first summer festivals. Songs like When I'm With You and The Sun Was High (So Was I) are also perfect for design with sounds quite summer hangovers and passionate loves that will not continue.

The beginning of summer is the perfect setting for the festival mood.
As you can imagine, I haven't certainly missed the opportunity to participate the sixth edition of the celebration of alternative all-Italian music, who answer the name of MI AMI. It 'was a big party, I must admit.
And despite the setting of most of these events often give the impression of wanting to attract more alternative posers that persons who are really interested in our good emerging sounds, I would say that this year's music has won, has made host.
You could tell right from the set list, mind you. It ranges from the histrionics Bud Spencer Blues Explosion, newcomers Buzz Aldrin, and the deans of the evenings in Pertini. There are the most interesting musical proposals that gave us this beginning of the year our country, perhaps the only missing is Samuel Katarro.
If you want to know in detail how is gone, you just have to read the latest issue of Arts Club, where there is a page (number 3) completely dedicated to the festival and written by me.

I arrive with friends at Magazzini generali quite early to fully enjoy the only italian date of Crystal Castles, but I still fail to attend the exhibition of the opener Tim Ghost.
There is a lot of people already in the space adjacent to the club: this is not surprising, because the Crystal Castles have been able to earn great fame in the last three years, moving quickly from MySpace phenomenon to sign for a subsidiary of Universal.
The last Wednesday of April, reveals a very hot temperature, and this proves to be quite disappointing in a place like the magazzini, crowded as in the big occasions.
I can also exchange a few words with Ethan before the concert and it seems friendly, though not very lucid: he says he hopes to be able to pull off a great live.
I just have time to check out the usual merchandising space (where I buy one of their "Madonna" t-shirt I've always loved), when Alice and Ethan go up on stage, accompanied by a drummer.
The duo of Toronto begin with Fainting Spells, the opening track from their new self-titled disc. Alice Glass shows immediately an enviable charisma and personality: the eyes of the public are all for her, although her voice in live shows is much more affected than expected. The sounds of Ethan prove a perfect backdrop to the movements of obsessive Alice, who, despite her twenty-one years of age, shows off a stage presence of real rocker.
The second track is the masterful Baptism, best track of their new (slightly more than adequate) LP and is the expression, in my opinion, of what should be the musical essence of the new Crystal Castles.
The crowd clearly agree with me concerning this song, and welcomes it with great fervour. At this point the group pulls out another wild card, the magnificent Courtship Dating (better known as the soundtrack of the british tv show Skins) from their debut album.
Then there is a triptych of new pieces: Celestica, Doe Deer and Emphaty. The third one really convinced me only in its live version, that is more energetic and raw.
At this point the situation within the club has already become unmanageable expecially for Alice crowdsurfing. The singer in fact begins to jump repeatedly between the front rows of the audience, hardly kept from the club security.
The crowd seems to enjoy and partecipate more actively: when begins Alice Practice (played after Air War and Crimewave, which remains in my opinion the best episode of the entire discography of the duo) it also screams the now well-known melody.
After another floorfiller from their new record (that anonymous track called Intimate) and less than an hour of frenetic live, the band leaves us with a bitter taste in mouth, already waiting for encore.
After the quick return on stage the duo offers the public the energic Black Panther and the B-Side Yes No.
Despite the sound not quite flawless (due to a speaker placement a bit too creative) and the short duration of the exhibition, Crystal Castles have demonstrated their ability to create an engaging and entertaining live. Alice Glass is also a force of nature, and after this concert I think he made a open breach in many hearts (including mine).
Too bad that this second album is a bit rambling, perhaps it should have followed the last musical intuitions of the less famous band HEALTH.Alessandro Blangettihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02378423774154994401noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1088166220407726532.post-11353156114445935972010-05-04T19:26:00.009+02:002010-05-04T20:12:22.647+02:00SURFER BLOOD - ASTRO COASTI Surfer Blood testimoniano, se ancora ce ne fosse bisogno, il buon momento di forma che sta vivendo l’indie pop a stelle e strisce, e la Florida (già patria degli ormai celebri Drums) più in particolare.
Così, su un quieto “so I have to go” in dissolvenza ,si chiude quest’album.

Surfer Blood testify the good form that is experiencing the indie pop in the USA, and particolarly in Florida (former home of the now famous Drums).
Astro Coast is the first test for this group of boys from West Palm Beach, and despite the inevitable pitfalls of youth, may after all be surpassed.
The disc features in his 40 minutes a predominantly lo-fi guitar sound, peppered here and there quotations from noisepop of the 90s' and is since the first listen deeply eclectic.
The texts of the quartet, in most cases, would satisfy the classic Seth Cohen, because his constant references too paranoia and inadequacy: about the future, about love and about the complexity of interpersonal relationships in general.
The influence here can be found in the the Shins rather than in the darker Death Cab. Even the singer's voice J.P. Pitts is very similar (especially in certain parts) of James Mercer tone, but the lyrical brilliance of the Shins' singer it is even far away.
Floating Vibes, the first track, shows immediately the ability of Surfer Blood to embroider guitar riffs and catchy melodies.
Swim it's the main single of the LP: gripping from the first listen, recalls the great Weezer's Blue Album.
The two subsequent tracks carry on pleasing, and smoothly along the lines of Floating Vibes.
Neightbour Riffs is a tasty instrumental, surf-music inspired, that reinterprets the the Beach Boys sounds as many groups (Real Estate, for example) have taught recently. Remains one of the finest tracks of the record.
Twin Peaks is another good song: the title alludes to the sexual frustration of the protagonist, forced to use the sofa of a friend only girl to watch movies of Lynch.
Slow Jabron it's a Shins style song, and leaves us with the two tracks that close the LP, which are Anchorage (perhaps the weakest song of the record) and Catholic Pagans, that fits perfectly as melancholy final track of the record.
So, on a quiet "I know I have to go" the album fade.
An album with fresh and spare no special drops.
A fresh album that, for lovers of 90s imaginary and retro-surf feeling, it will be a faithful companion for years and summers to come. 8Alessandro Blangettihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02378423774154994401noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1088166220407726532.post-9366737776577987262010-04-23T21:31:00.004+02:002010-04-23T22:41:40.318+02:00L'ANGOLO DEL DESIGN: “!”
Moment!

by Mattia Fossati

Nendo, from Japanese language, literally, "Crete": versatile material that lends itself to endless applications.
The study led by Japanese designer Oki Sato fits this description, and managed to win in a few years, a important place on the international scene of design.
Oki Sato was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1977 and graduated in 2002 at Waseda University in Tokyo. In the same year was awarded with the gold medal at the International Lighting Design Kazumi and he based, again in Tokyo, the study Nendo.
The just 32 years old Sato boasts a studio with two offices (Milan and Tokyo) that was reported by Newsweek as one of the best 100 small Japanese companies, with many mentions in international competitions, collections displayed at MOMA in New York, at Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris and in other major museums in the world.
Nendo covers design, interior design and architecture, with a design approach not boring, eclectic and always able to surprise, accompanied by maniacal attention to the formal and functional product.
Work in design and communication is combined with the intense research that led to the study of objects that amaze and introduce use of unpublished material every day (an example is the paper for projects like the "Cabbage Chair ") or materials used decontextualize always elsewhere, to create new and intriguing experience.
Clear example of this are products such as "Polar" table with metal frame and polarized glass shelf, which overlapped with other leaves shows a floral texture; or the famous "Chocolate Pencil" useful to temper chocolate on your favorite desserts, or even the"Hanabi" lamp that, with the use of shape memory material, opens like a flower once turned on.
Between the industrial production, the collaboration with companies such as Cappellini, Oluce, Lexus, De Padova, etc ... Some Nendo objects are produced in limited series that rely on the skill and craftsmanship of local artisans, creating real collections "exclusive" strongly linked to material culture and know-how of the place.
It 's interesting in this regard, see the product "Cord Chair", with wooden chair legs with a diameter of 15 mm, in wich the wisdom of the craftsmen of Hiroshima Prefecture manufacturing Maruni Wood inserted inside a structure metal rod with a diameter of 9mm.
Or the "fadeout Chair, a chair that seems to float in the air thanks to the legs, acrylic (hand painted) that dissolve slowly.
Oki Sato and Nendo boys are proof of the infinite possibilities that activities such as design and general design research can offer if conducted with skill and method, making the products more attractive and totally separated from the idea of designers as mere ephemeral items.
As Nendo boys say do all you gonna do is prepare yourself for another "!" questi materiali diventano “furbi” grazie alla loro particolare composizione, all’additivazione di sostanze o altri materiali, o ancora, grazie all’inclusione, al loro interno, di dispositivi digitali.

by Mattia Fossati

The world is in constant motion, the change is getting faster, and technology, an integral part of our lives, has become essential and has open in all fields, new roads for which no end in sight.
The fields of design and architecture have always used (and certainly contributed) technology development, especially with the use of new materials and their related production techniques.
For some years now have taken on increasing importance (within design) the so-called "Smart Materials", high performance materials able to provide services outside of the norm, these materials become "Smart" because of their special composition of substances or for their additivity with other materials, or through the inclusion, within them, of digital devices.
The materials linked to the "smart" are lots and the applications in general design are virtually endless.
Just think of the piezoelectric material, which create energy when compressed to Shape memory materials, which always return to the initial form or that the user wished to impress, to those that control the pH, rather than the body temperature or perspiration, or those antibacterial and odor (usually through the inclusion of silver ions); or even the self-cleaning glass (thanks to the presence of titanium dioxide). And finally, those of which I will deal specifically, and that lend themselves to more "playful" applications, the materials include thermochromic inks, able to change color according to temperature and return to the original state when the reaction ends.
Recently, hundreds of designers played with the features of this materials, from
the most renowned to the most unknown, and the results were not always exciting, but they certainly helped to open new scenarios and new worlds with emotional capacities that involve a material and the relationship between you and it.
Just think of the concrete "Solid Poetry" created by S. Happle and F. Molenschot of Dutch group Droog Design, the group already well known for its research activities placed and objects become, in the course of a few years, "classics" (as the "85 Lamps" or "Milk Bottle Lamp").
Cement created by two designers react with rain (and more just with water) open up to reveal a texture of floral silkscreen directly on cement with thermochromic ink.
Another product worth mentioning, although still under development, which exploits the same principle, is the cloth "underfull" of designer Kristine Bjaadal, who always takes care rather than a product line, the experience that the object it's able to give you.
The cloth in question completely rethinks and redesigns the dynamics revolve around the classic incident table: overthrow drinks, water, wine, etc ... ..
When a drink is reversed on the tablecloth displays a texture representative of the butterflies which then turns an accident into something fascinating and fun.
The artist Shi Yuan, however, has set up, thanks to this technology, a paper wall represented by a flower that opens and closes depending on the room temperature.
Probably still many products of the same kind are being developed at the same time I write.
All that remains is to observe and see how far we can push to give new expression to objects and materials of all days, and how far we can exploit this 'intelligence' that we are giving to the various aforementioned materials to improve our lives and that of others.
You Overdid It Doll è il primo singolo dell’album.

We are facing the second LP of Mancunian guys Courteeners, pupils of his majesty Morrissey.
The charisma of arrogant frontman of this band (and markedly Gallagherian, like the rest his look) has always been a double-edged weapon. Liam Fray, in fact, because of its genuine arrogance, tends to generate huge expectations against the band's record releases, which are then promptly rejected. Let's be clear right away. St Jude, the Courteeners debut, was not a bad album. He was very direct, and with some great singles. It was appended to the style of many groups brit-rock era, but had neither the verve nor the maturity necessary to erect the Courteeners as new messiahs of Manchester, as too many magazines had predicted.
This Falcon seems to be more mature and rational.
The sound of the group seem to change and the pieces are much softer and often have parts of piano. There are several orchestral and anthemical arrangements, that wink in the last Elbows, putting aside the Libertines riffs that characterized the debut with the intent to embrace more audience and increase it's credibility as stadium indie-band. Their intention is, however, succeeded only in part.
As already happened in St Jude, the first pieces of the disc are more tasty. The opening track is, for example, perhaps the best of the record. The majestic The opener, already from the first chorus shows a double declaration of love, longing and respect to Manchester and to an hypothetical woman who lives far from this city. The admiration of the band towards the environment that gave birth is a recurring theme in many parts of the album, but, moreover, the Courteeners are truly revered by crowds of their city. Take Over The World, in line with a text that seems to want to erect the band to Olympus of rock bands, is musically a perfect anthem for those who sing their hearts out in rooms crowded. Has an excellent growth and an enviable but repetitive chorus. The subsequent track, Cross My Heart And Hope To Fly, is in line with the sound of the previous one and shows also a good care over the use of melody. But you can already guess that the lyrics are quite simple, although they have changed a bit theme compared to the first disc. You Overdid It Doll is the first single of the album. The refrain is very catchy and the piece has a good dose of hard groove (in pure Kasabian style) that was missing in the debut album. At this point the quality of work falls enough, as evidenced by songs such as The Rest Of The World Has Gone Home, an acoustic song that enhances the voice of Fray, but is also less isnspired than How Come?, a similar ballad of the first album.
Falcon is a good album that lovers of this kind of music will certainly love to hear for a while. But it's not a masterpiece, or the certificate of maturity that maybe Liam Fray wanted to show the whole world. The repetitiveness of certain tracks, and some decline of quality in the final songs will not preclude the Courteeners to fill stadiums in their Manchester, but will not allow them, at least for now, to take possession of largest audiences in the world as claimed in one of the songs of this LP. 7Alessandro Blangettihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02378423774154994401noreply@blogger.com0
